What is multiplayer on Wii like?

I've been thinking of getting the Wii games, but I'm wondering whether both P1 and P2 can use their own tatacon or whether the second player has to settle for a controller.
I live with a fellow taiko player, so it's kind of important. :>

both players can use any controller no matter who is using which controller
